      There isn’t a frown to be found at Somtum Der. Located along Sukhumvit 55 in Thonglor, this fantastic, light-drenched eating corner will cheer the crankiest of people up with its beach-like decor that features rattan-covered lampshades, light-coloured wooden tables and benches, and fun attitude from its wait staff.

      Through the collaborative efforts of Chef Kornthanut Thongnum and Thanaruek Laoraowirodge, the latter of whom was born and raised in Khon Kaen, this restaurant has created a menu that is heavily inspired by the food of northern Isan, which tends to be saltier but still packed with spice and punch. You can’t go wrong with the eponymous Som Tam, otherwise known as the green papaya salad. With over twenty different variants on this renown dish to choose from, you’ll definitely find something to suit your palate. Meanwhile, people who want a kick in their food should definitely order up a serving of Super Spicy Chicken Wing Soup or the oh-so-tender House Special Marinated Pork. Then wash it all down with an ice-cold glass of Laotian beer, Beerlao Dark and you’re all set.
