    If you find yourself craving the vibrant flavours of Malay cuisine, head to Bijan Restaurant. This homely eatery serves up familiar, comforting flavours with plenty of homemade touches.

    The Popiah Goreng, for instance, is an appetiser not to be missed. The vegetable spring rolls are made in-house, and deep-fried until crispy. Perfect for dipping into a house-made spicy chilli sauce. Another popular appetiser is the Daging Bungkus Kukus. This rare treat features a fluffy pancake, filled with juicy ground meat marinated with herbs and bathed in a housemade gravy,

    If you’re craving a bowl of hot soup, be sure to try the restaurant’s signature Sup Ekor Sapi Bijian. This savoury soup is redolent with freshly ground spices, and chock-full of tender braised oxtail. For mains, Bijan serves a selection of Western and Malay classics, with the occasional fusion dish. The Spaghetti Rendang, for instance, is the perfect dish for diners who crave a little pasta, but still want to inhale the aroma and heartiness of beef rendang.

    From the wok, expect fluffy rice infused with Malay herbs over roaring flames. The smoke-kissed Traditional Kerabu Rice Bijan is packed with flavour, and served with crackers for garnish and strips of juicy beef. Also good from the Mains selection is the Gulai Lemak Daging Salai Dengan Jantung Pisang. Made the traditional way, this hearty stew features fresh banana flower cooked in a turmeric gravy, with slices of fork-tender chargrilled Australian sirloin.

    Be sure to save some space for dessert as well. The Banana Fritters with Coconut Ice Cream is a gourmand’s dream, where golden-brown sweet pillows of fruit are topped with a creamy coconut ice cream, and drizzled with a rich gula melaka. Order this one to share. (Jul 2019)
